1-2 hours
Lesson type:
Project Based Lesson
Lesson overview:

Help celebrate the holiday honoring  the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and his efforts to peacefully bring people together, especially people of different races. After reviewing  experiences in the life of this important leader, students will learn a simple song in his honor, create POSTERS OF PEACE utilizing paint, markers, crayons, etc., and also write short "slogans"  of peaceful living and cooperation.  Through studying important milestones in Dr. King's life, students will be  inspired and equipped [ both with vocabulary and images] to celebrate the gifts of peace and acceptance that Dr. King spoke of  so eloquently.

Essential Question:

What were the skills and talents of Dr. King as he worked for peaceful integration of the United States?  Students will discuss courage, perserverance, kindness, and acceptance of others as they learn about Dr. King's life.  The activities suggested  will help them express this knowledge by singing songs, creating posters, writing poems, and diving into other creative activities.
